Research Aims

I want more violists to access Traditional music, to know that it is an option.

(Tomlinson, 2018)

  • To better understand the historical and contemporary use of the viola in Scottish Traditional Music.
  • Develop a vision and explore the possibilities of a creative role for the viola relating to current Scottish Traditional music practice including new music compositions, arrangements and recordings.
  • Develop materials to encourage the teaching and application of viola in Traditional music for formal and informal instrumental tuition in Scotland.
